Transport in Purley Today

Purley is served by two bus services and two railway stations. There are also school bus services and two services for the elderly or disabled who find normal public transport difficult.

The bus services are:-

Reading Buses Service 16 which runs from Chestnut Grove on the River Estate via New Hill, Oxford Road, Knowsley Road, Long Lane, Dark Lane, Overdown Road and then along the Oxford Road into Reading. For most of the day it runs on a 15 minute frequency. See Reading Buses for timetable details.

Thames Travel Serice 143 which operates between Whitchurch and Upper Basildon via Pangbourne and Purley along the Oxford Road to Reading. This service is somewhat erratic and is subsidised by both West Berkshire Council and Purley on Thames Parish Council. See Thames Travel for details.

The railway stations are Tilehurst and Pangbourne, both of which offer a half hour frequency service between London Paddngton and Oxford via Slough, Maidenhead, Reading and Didcot.

The principal disabled bus service is operated by Readibus and provides door to door transport in the Greater Reading area - Phone 0118 931 0000 to make a booking.

The Pangbourne and District Volunteer Centre offers trips to local hospitals, medical facilities and other venues for the RG8 and RG31-6 post code zones. Phone 0118 984 4586 to make a booking between 0930 and 1130 Mondays to Friday. Wheelchairs but not children can be accommodated.

School bus services are operated to Little Heath and Theale Green Schools by the Big Green Bus Company. Details from the two schools.

In addition there are services to Madjeski Stadium starting at the Knowsley Road/Goodliffe Gardens stop when Reading FC are playing at home.
