Purley on Thames Today

Purley on Thames today is basically a suburb of Reading. It lies in a bend of the River Thames, some 4 miles from the centre of Reading. It is crossed by the main Great Western Railway line running from London to Bristol and by the A329 which links Reading to Wallingford.

Across the river, which forms the northern boundary are the Parishes of Whitchurch on Thames and Mapledurham in Oxfordshire. Reading is to the east, Tilehurst to the south and Sulham and Pangbourne to the west.

There are about 1700 houses, with two shops and a garage. There are two recreation grounds and several informal play areas. The population is around 5000.

The Parish Council has 13 members and looks after many local amenities, although West Berkshire Council provides the major services. There is an infant (Purley C of E) and a primary (Long Lane)  school and a special (Brookfields)  school, a secondary (Denefield) school and three other schools are just over the border in Pangbourne (Pangbourne Primary)  and Tilehurst (Westwood Farm Infants and Westwood Farm Junior)
