Purley in Old Images

In replacement of our usual evening meeting, we have a special launch afternoon, commencing at 2.30pm, for Project Purley’s new book ‘Purley in Old Images’.  The launch will be hosted by John Chapman and will include light refreshments.   There will be a display about the book and books will be available to buy, if you so wish.  In order to help us cater for the launch, we have requested in your invitation that you RSVP.   We have invited a number of guests to join us and our guest of honour will be the Lord Lieutenant of the Royal County of Berkshire, the Hon Mrs Bayliss, who kindly wrote the foreword to ‘Purley in Old Images’.

The Art of Deception in WW2 by Hugh Granger

Those who attended Hugh’s first talk to Project Purley in February last year will recall the energy and professionalism of his account of how the English Language has evolved.  This talk on the art of deception in World War Two, promises to be as dynamic and entertaining.  Hugh will explore how we faked everything from maps, bomb damage, lorries, tanks, parachutists, harbours and airfields to entire invasions.

Friday 19th November 2010

John Betjamin by Roy Dennison

Roy is chairman of the Wantage Branch of the Sir John Betjeman Society and as befits an enthusiast for Betjeman’s poetry, he was a railwayman for 40 years.  Roy met Betjeman on several occasions, including once at St Pancreas Station when he told the great man that he should stop munching the baguette he had just brought before he walked through the doors of the British Transport Hotel for a dinner appointment. We are assured of an interesting and amusing evening.

Friday 10th December 2011 (entry by ticket only)

Seasonal performance by The Rain or Shine Theatre Company

The Rain or Shine Theatre Company is a professional touring group whose productions are always a sell-out in Purley.  This year, for the second running, they are proposing to complete a winter tour and have provisionally agreed to perform at The Barn on December 10.  David will let you know ticket prices and when you can start buying them at a meeting nearer to their performance.  Once again profits will go to Charity.

Friday 17th December

Christmas Party - members only

Once again Rick and Val are extending a warm welcome to members of Project Purley at the beautiful and historic Gatehouse for our Christmas party. Members are asked to pay £1 each to cover the cost of mulled wine and to bring a plate of finger-food for either the savoury or dessert table to share.  The evening begins at 7.30.  This is always a very relaxed and enjoyable evening and a wonderful start to the count down to Christmas.
